It’s Rob from Rob’s Garage again….

My wife Barbie and I enjoy sitting in the driveway as the sun travels across the eastern sky. Some of our best times and conversations are had while enjoying the waning sun and an ice cold beverage. This particular evening was no different. We were knee deep in enjoyment when I spied a couple of people coming down the street that seemed out of place. You know the type, knocking on doors, trying to capture someones attention.

Low and behold we turned out to be their captive audience.

As Charlie and Mike made their way up our driveway the first thing that Charlie said was “don’t worry we are not here to sell you anything” I was skeptical at best as he warmed us with his banter and then launched into his presentation. He told us that he and his trainee Mike were canvassing the neighborhood in advance looking for a sponsor home to promote their home alarm system. Just one or two homes per block could have the benefit of free equipment which would give the second wave of salespeople the ability to send neighbors to our home for a testimonial.

Charlie proceeded to tell us about break-ins both on our street and in our vicinity. He told us about a 87 year old woman robbed and beaten then left for dead. Smash and grabs, criminals just looking for something to pawn to support their drug habits etc…

It was shortly thereafter that Barbie voiced that at times when she has been alone that she had heard noises that scared her. What if something happened while she was soaking in the tub?

I very seldom question our security although years ago after selling a car out of the classifieds the buyer contacted me weeks after the purchase demanding his money back because the water pump had failed and as a result of his negligence and the engine had seized. When I told him that there would be no refund and that his lack of initiative in repairing a minor coolant leak led to his vehicles demise he threatened to come over and beat my ass!

That night I was afraid. I see dumb people sums it up! But truthfully I realized that the only thing between me and a bullet was a pane of glass. The only thing between someone wanting to be inside my house was either a wooden door or a window. I was vulnerable that evening and I have been vulnerable ever since but not scared like that night.

Well Charlie made some good points and we were engaged and asking questions about the system that he sells and what it could do to help us. Before Charlie could sweep in with the close I stopped him and told him that as interested as we might be we would do nothing that night. You know how it goes, its a one time offer with only limited availability. You have to act now this is your only chance to get this deal etcetera….

I said ” I sell cars for a living and when someone is interested in a vehicle they come to me. They walk through the dealerships doors and they know we are reputable. they researched us before coming” I told him that we don’t know him or his company and that we would do nothing without some research.

Barbie and I went inside the house and continued the dialog.

We had been sold in our own driveway. We were getting a alarm system somewhere!

I took some time to research the company and the product that Charlie and Mike represented, the Better Business Bureau looked ok. Then I contacted a competitor and talked with the representative for a while. The monthly cost was the same. I did find out that you are signing a 60 month contract and their equipment was free. She also indicated that they just ship the equipment to the home and we set it up.

I was ready to have a conversation with Charlie!

We decided that we would continue the dialog now that I was armed with questions.

As usual we turned in at about 11pm. I put on my CPAP mask and fell asleep!

I was awakened from a sound sleep by a loud bang! It sounded like someone had kicked in the front door. I remember looking at the clock, it was 3:30am. I jumped out of bed quickly parted the bedroom window shade and peered outside, seeing nothing, in the dark, naked, I fumbled my way to the gun safe.

Tune in tomorrow for the conclusion…….

I was awakened from a sound sleep by a loud bang, it sounded like someone had kicked in the front door! I remember looking at the clock, it was 3:30am. I jumped out of bed quickly parted the bedroom window shade and peered outside, seeing nothing, in the dark, naked, I fumbled my way to the gun safe. I attempted to open my biometric safe. It was set to unlock based on my fingerprints. I have never attempted to open the safe in the dark let alone under duress. I first had to locate the button to start the scan then press my fingertip against the window until the safe door unlocks. Four attempts later with much fumbling and loud beeping and finally I got the safe to open.

I quietly opened the bedroom door and negotiated the stairs slowly making my way to the door at the bottom of the landing. I opened the door as quietly and as quickly as I could with the barrel of my 40mm pointed up and my finger on the trigger. We have never experienced a home invasion but I had to excersise caution because my stepson lives in the unattached garage but he does come in to eat and use the bathroom.

Feeling exposed and vulnerable even though I was armed I dropped the pistol to level and looked to my left then my right. I did not see anything yet but that didn’t mean a lot to me, my heart hammering trying to find it’s way out of my ribcage! Just outside of the landing is both the entrance to the living room and in the other direction the doorway into the kitchen. No lights were lit so I was still in darkness. I made my way through the living room to the front door. It was unbroken and appeared to be closed.

I retraced my steps and entered the kitchen, all still appearing clear. I opened the door to the basement where there is another doorway out into the driveway and checked it as well.

Whew! all seemed to be secure! I made my way to the kitchen window and on my toes peered out into the driveway then walked to the sliding glass door and flipped on the back yard flood lights. Nothing moving!

I made my way into the living room and looked out all the windows, all was quiet and seemingly peaceful except for me. Adrenalin pumping and paranoid.
